Technical Visit Report

On 22nd October 2016, 17 Students from Eco Club of St. Josephs Indian High School and Fr.Gerald, Principal of the school and 3 faculty members and I went for a visit to Parivarthana Unit in Christ University, Bangalore.

A meeting was fixed to visit the Parivarthana unit. Dr.Victor, HOD of MSW and Prof. Phinu Joseph helped us in organizing the visit. They connected us to Mr. Ranjeet Kumar Singh a faculty from MSW Department who gave us orientation to the students on how the unit was setup. And further the Unit was explained practically by Mr. John Christ, Marketing Officer of Parivarthana. The reason behind choosing Parivarthana was that they called there campus as zero waste campus and through this unit they gave employment to many women from the slums in the locality behind the campus and also generated income from this unit. This was very inspiring to the students to know more on the unit and implement in there school, home and daily life.

Description of the Unit:
The Unit is called as “Parivarthana” which means, To Change. This unit was started in 2008 where their basic idea was told as Thrash to Treasure. They get 800 tons of waste. The Main process here involves collection and segregation. The Parivarthana Unit consist of many small units, they are: Water treatment plant, Bio gas plant, Compost Unit, Handmade paper making machine andPlant Nursery.

1. Handmade paper making machine :
This unit contains a Hydro pulp meter in which they add paper and cotton in 2:2 ratios. It has a machine which contains a mould in which the pulp of paper is poured and layer of cotton cloth laid over it and again many layers of cotton cloth and paper pulp over and over. Finally it is pressed tightly to remove the water from it. And then this is dried in sun. After sufficient drying it is been colored with natural colors and made into handmade papers and other products made out of these handmade paper. These papers are thick than the normal paper and has a very high economic value.

2. Compost Unit:
The compost unit of Parivarthana is an artificially built pit which contains two pipes in it. The segregated food waste and dry leaves from the campus is put into this pit and this is converted into Bio Manure. After the introduction of food waste, Bio-Inoculum is added and heat is provided through the pipes and water vapor is released from it. Due to the action of Bio-Inoculum worms come into picture. After 45 days the process is complete. Then it is allowed to dry in sunlight and finally compost is ready to use. In the final stage after the compost is ready Charcoal is laid over it to remove the bad odor. This compost is used as manure to the plants in the campus and also helping to setup a plant nursery.

3. Water Treatment plant:
The Water Treatment plant of Parivarthana is a very huge plant occupying a large area. It mainly has the collection tank, settling tank and sand filters. The waste water comes into to the collection tank through a tunnel. Then slowly the water is moved into the settling tank in which Di-Ammonium Phosphate and Urea is added which helps in settlement. It is a very slow process and the waste is pumped to other tanks. One of the tanks contains plastic coated with carbon which helps in absorbing the waste. There are sand filters and carbon filters (PSF and ACF) which filters the water. The filtered water is then sent to the artificially made pool. And that water is used for irrigation purpose.

4. Bio Gas Unit:
Parivarthana Unit Consist of two bio gas plants. One is small, 1cubic which is meant for 2kgs. The other is big which is of 500 cubic meters for more than 500kgs. This Bio Gas plant is a called Floating Jacket type. Bio Gas Typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. It is primarily methane, carbon dioxide and small amount of hydrogen sulfide. These gases can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen. The energy released from this allows biogas to be used as a fuel, mainly heating purpose, such as cooking. 500kgs of waste, 200liters of water and the slurry of waste is put into it. Seeds are not allowed inside this floating tank because these gases initiate the growth of the plant. Finally 4tons of cow dung is put into it, but cow dung is put only once in 2 years. The cooking gas produced by this plant is used in the Mega Kitchen in the University.

5. Farm:
The campus has a farm which has goats, different types of hens, goose, dogs, etc. maintained by responsible people at the university.

The feedback of the students was taken in the class after the visit. The feedback session was an interactive session. The students said that it was a very inspirational visit; they learnt many new concepts and saw how the unit works, experienced a different environment in the campus enjoyed the greenery, met new people and each said that they want to setup such unit in their school campus as well. The feedback of School Principal and school faculty was that they want to have more such visits because students grasp more knowledge when experienced practically.

It was a very motivational visit which helped the school and students know about how they can be more ecofriendly by using these methods and implementing it. The school decided to have a compost unit and terrace gardening. This technical visit is not ending here; I would like to conclude by stating that “Knowledge is something that spreads wider and wider, and this visit has made an impact in the students mind and it will surely create awareness among many more people in the society through communication”.
